The principal authorities responsible for regulating waste activities throughout the UK are as follows:

Local Authorities also have the power to regulate some waste management activities such as flytipping, littering, graffiti etc within their jurisdiction by the powers given to them under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. Depending on the severity of the incident this usually results in the issuing of Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs).

Local Authorities are also responsible for regulating Part A(2) and Part B activities[1] which require an Environmental Permit under the requirements of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016. The Part A2 system is known as Local Authority Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (LA-IPPC) and the Part B system is known as Local Authority Pollution Prevention and Control (LAPPC)[2].
