Summary
Skelton Grange is described as a combined heat and power facility which, when constructed and fully operational, will process 410,000 tonnes of residual waste (with a permit maximum of 435,000 tonnes per annum) to generate 49 MW (gross) of electricity. It reached financial close at the beginning of July 2021[1]. Located at a site in south Leeds, it is being developed by Enfinium which was created by the coming together of Wheelabrator UK and Multifuel Energy.
Technology
The plant comprises two lines of a standard moving grate technology processing around 22.2 tonnes per hour of waste per line and producing super-heated steam and 41.6MWe gross, with a net export of 38MWe[2]. The technology will be HZI's own EfW technology[3].
Construction
Hitachi Zosen Inova has been named as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contract (EPC) contractor for the delivery of the facility[1].This project will be HZI's 14th project within the UK. Full commissioning of the plant is planned for 2025[3].
Waste Input
The plant is intended to run on residual Household Waste and Commercial Waste and potentially dried Sewage Sludge. In February 2021 Enfinium signed a 10 year waste supply contract for 250,000 tonnes per annum with Associated Waste Management (part of the Beauparc business), which has a site a mile form the Skelton Grange site , for supply to this site and others in the Enfinium EfW portfoilio[4].
