The UK and England estimates for Commercial and Industrial Waste (C&I Waste) have been calculated as part of the Waste Statistics Regulation returns for 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. It includes manufacturing and industrial processes and services based enterprises, but excludes sewage sludge [1]. Whilst DEFRA have worked to improve the methodology, the data is subject to uncertainty due to data gaps and data limitations and is far less certain that Household Waste and Local Authority Collected Waste.
'As Received' Tonnage
Adjustments in the table below do not include adjustments from wet weight to dry weight for sludges (which are submitted to Eurostat) and makes no attempt to estimate waste processed at sites exempt from Environmental Permitting and does not overlap with Recycling data:
UK | England | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Commercial | Industrial | Total C&I | Commercial | Industrial | Total C&I | |
2010 | 28.7 | 15.0 | 43.7 | 21.6 | 10.4 | 32.0 |
2011 | UK 2011 Estimates not available | 21.4 | 12.0 | 33.4 | ||
2012 | 25.0 | 17.6 | 42.6 | 21.0 | 12.9 | 33.9 |
2013 | UK 2013 Estimates not available | 20.8 | 12.0 | 32.8 | ||
2014 | 25.4 | 14.6 | 40.0 | 21.3 | 10.4 | 31.7 |
2015 | UK 2015 Estimates not available | 22.5 | 9.4 | 31.9 | ||
2016 | 27.5 | 13.6 | 41.1 | 23.6 | 9.5 | 33.1 |
2017 | UK 2017 Estimates not available | 25.8 | 10.3 | 36.1 | ||
2018 | UK 2018 Estimates not available | 27.1 | 10.1 | 37.2 |
DEFRA state that year on year data is not comparable, but the variances are considerable, and the level of Recycling of this waste is also not entirely known, with estimates varying between 30% and 50% of that arising. These uncertainties make the planning and development of Treatment and Disposal infrastructure in the UK for this waste extremely difficult to estimate with confidence.
