Principal Aquifers in England, Wales and Scotland are defined respectively by the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.
The definition in each case relates to the classification in the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD).
Prior to the implentation of the WFD, Principal Aquifers were known as Major Aquifers.
