Healthcare Waste incinerators are required to meet the temperature and emission limits contained within the Industrial Emissions Directive in much the same way as standard Energy from Waste/Energy Recovery Facilities. Generally they have a primary combustion chamber operating at 800 - 1000°C and a secondary chamber that operates at a minimum temerature of 1100°C, with a retention time for the combustion gases of two seconds[1].

The incineration plant also includes gas cleaning equipment to reduce emissions to air[1].this equipment deals with compounds such as hydrogen chloride, and sulphur dioxide, which form asa result of chlorine and sulphur compounds present int he original waste material[1].
