Summary

A Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Biomass EfW facility Kent Renewable Energy Plant is based on consuming up to 240,000 tonnes per annum of Wood Waste and other Biomass as a feedstock to produce 27 MW of power. This facility supplies heat (in the form of steam) and electricity to the nearby Discovery Park, one of Europe’s leading Science and Technology parks near Sandwich in Kent. The excess power is exported to the national grid[2].

The fuel is sourced locally by Euroforest Ltd, a provider of harvesting and marketing services to the UK forestry industry, who supplies low grade wood for the facility from woodland management practices in the south east of the UK[2].

Kent Renewable Energy Plant became operational in 2018 after beginning a 25 month construction period in the summer of 2016[2].

Plant

This facility is operated by Burmeister Wain Scandinavian Contractor (BWSC), who also provided turnkey EPC services for the project[2].

Kent Renewable Energy Plant received an investment of approximately £150m of equity from its majority-owner Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) in order to develop the facility[3].

Annual Sustainability Tonnage Input/Fuel

The tonnage[4] received by the plant in the most recent Annual Sustainability Report and for the previous 3 years for 2020/21 was reported by Ofgem as below[5]:

Waste Tonnage, By Origin

The table shows a list of the Waste for the Permit LP3034RD, that has arrived into sites as reported to the Regulator and then publicised in their reported statistics. The Data used is from the most recent returns. The total reported tonnage arriving at the site was: Expression error: Unexpected < operator.t.

Where this tonnage exceeds that reported in year of the corresponding annual report, this may be due to the following reasons:

  • Tonnage may have been received but not incinerated, i.e. the material is held pending incineration (the operator return to the EA reports as received whereas the annual report focuses on when the waste is incinerated.)
  • Material may have been received into the site but treated in some other way than incineration.
  • Material may have been received on the but transferred out of site for disposal/treatment at another site rather than incineration on the site.
