Regulatory Authorities
The principal authorities responsible for regulating waste activities throughout the UK are as follows:
- England - the Environment Agency (EA)
- Scotland - Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA)
- Wales - Natural Resources Wales (NRW)
- Northern Ireland - Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA)
Local Authorities also have the power to regulate some waste management activities such as flytipping, littering, graffiti etc within their jurisdiction by the powers given to them under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. Depending on the severity of the incident this usually results in the issuing of Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs).
