Clinical Waste Incinerator operated by Stericycle (SRCL) Ltd and located at Woodbridge Road East, Ipswich.

Summary

Clinical Waste Incinerator operated by Stericycle (SRCL) Ltd and located at Woodbridge Road East, Ipswich. It is a stepped hearth design with an annual throughput of 8000 tonnes[1].

Plant

The waste is loaded into the primary combustion chamber where the main combustion takes place[1]. The flue gases them pass on to a secondary chamber that operates at a minimum temperature of 850°C for burning non-hazardous waste and in excess of a 1000°C when burning hazardous pharmaceutical waste. The secondary chamber is kept oxygen rich and is used to provide a two second residence time for the flue gas as they pass through[1].

The heat energy in the flue gas is then used to pass through a waste heat boiler to produce steam for hot water and heating in the hospital. The flue gas then have carbon and hydrated lime added before being filtered and vented to atmosphere via the stack[1].
