Digestate
Digestate is a nutrient-rich substance formed through the process of Anaerobic Digestion and comprises the indigestible material and dead microorganisms from the process[1].
The nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus present in the feedstock is not transferred to the Biogas produced, and therefore the total amount is retained in the Digestate. The nutrients are present in a form available to plants and can therefore be utilised as a fertiliser. The nutrient composition of digestate varies depending on the feedstock, but typically it contains:
- Nitrogen: 2.3 - 4.2 kg/tonne
- Phosphorous: 0.2 - 1.5 kg/tonne
- Potassium: 1.3 - 5.2 kg/tonne [1].
