LAWDC

In the early 1990s, local authorities were permitted to create arms length waste management companies to operate waste functions previously operated in-house, notably landfill sites. These companies were known as LAWDCs - Local Authority Waste Disposal Companies. Many of these companies have now been sold on to larger commercial waste companies, but some are still owned by local authorities.
