Runcorn 1&2 ERF (from )

One of the largest ERF facilities in the UK with permitted operational capacity of 1,100,000 tonnes per annum, operated by Viridor and owned by Viridor and Ineous Chlor. Delivery of waste is by both road and rail and the facility processes both residual Household Waste and Commercial Waste in the form of RDF[1]

History

The Runcorn facility was built in two phases with 425,000 tonnes per annum capacity in each phase. The initial capacity focused on the solution delivered as part of the PFI for GMWDA and was then subsequently extended to deliver a capacity of 850,000 tonnes per annum. At a later stage the permitted capacity was further extended to 1,100,000 tonnes per annum to reflect the lower Calorific Value of the fuel delivered than was anticipated in the design. The facility is a CHP plant, based on Ineous Chlor's site in Runcorn, delivering 51MW of heat for their adjacent chemical manufacturing site

Plant

Built by Keppel Seghers under a Design & Build EPC-turnkey contract phase 1 was handed over in January 2015, and phase 2 in April 2015 at a contract value of GBP £390 million [2]. The plant comprises 4 lines (2 in each phase) of standard combustion technology generating superheated steam, and is designed to run on RDF with an average CV of 11.5MJ/kg
