Summary
A Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Biomass EfW facility based on consuming 240,000 tonnes per annum of waste and virgin wood biomass as a feedstock to produce 27 MW of power. This facility supplies heat (in the form of steam) and electricity to the nearby Discovery Park, one of Europe’s leading Science and Technology parks near Sandwich in Kent. The excess power is exported to the national grid[1].
The wood feedstock is sourced locally by Euroforest Ltd, a provider of harvesting and marketing services to the UK forestry industry, who supplies low grade wood for the facility from woodland management practices in the south east of the UK[1].
Kent Renewable Energy Plant became operational in 2018 after beginning a 25 month construction period in the summer of 2016[1]
Plant
This facility is operated by Burmeister Wain Scandinavian Contractor (BWSC), who also provided turnkey EPC services for the project[2].
Kent Renewable Energy Plant received an investment of approximately £150m of equity from its majority-owner Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) in order to develop the facility[3].
