Summary
A Biomass Waste EFW facility Barry Dock – Biomass No 2 is based processing up to 86,000 tonnes per annum of Wood Waste generating 10MWe to be exported to the local grid. The facility is located off Woodham Road, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan. The Wood Waste feedstock consumed at this facility comes from a variety of sources including municipal recycling centres and manufacturing companies[2].
Construction of this facility began in 2016 and entered the commissioning stage in 2019[2]. It was reported in August 2021 that commissioning had resumed after pausing in April 2020[3]. This plant and the other two developed by Aviva Investors[4] by were reported in November 2024 as being close to being mothballed [1]
Operations are carried out by Barry Biomass, which is fully monitored by Natural Resources Wales (NRW)[4].
Plant
The facility is owned, managed and financed by Aviva Investors[4]
Gasification technology is implemented to recover energy[4].
Annual Sustainability Tonnage Input/Fuel
The tonnage[5] received by the plant in the most recent Annual Sustainability Report and for the previous 3 years for 2020/21 was reported by Ofgem as below[6]:

Waste Tonnage, By Origin
The table shows a list of the Waste for the Permit AB3790ZB, that has arrived into sites as reported to the Regulator and then publicised in their reported statistics. The Data was last updated on October 2023. The total reported tonnage arriving at the site was: 0t.
Where this tonnage exceeds that reported in year of the corresponding annual report, this may be due to the following reasons:
- Tonnage may have been received but not incinerated, i.e. the material is held pending incineration (the operator return to the EA reports as received whereas the annual report focuses on when the waste is incinerated.)
- Material may have been received into the site but treated in some other way than incineration.
- Material may have been received on the but transferred out of site for disposal/treatment at another site rather than incineration on the site.
