Sherwood Biomass Plant

Summary

The Sherwood Biomass Waste Combined Heat and Power(CHP) EFW facility is located in Widmerpool, Nottingham and generates 6.55MWe of electricity and up to 4.5 MWth of process heat which is supplied to the adjacent sawmill operations[1]. The plant uses up to 52,000 tonnes of Wood Waste per annum[1] which is supplied by Waring Waste and Mick George[2].

In 2015 Veolia secured a 20 year contract worth £50 million from Equitex ESI CHP to operate the Sherwood Biomass facility. Under the contract Veolia will provide operation and maintenance on a 24/7 basis and will deliver monitoring, reporting and compliance services[1]. The agreement also covers water treatment, emission monitoring and ash disposal[1]. Veolia have also secured a long term PPA with Engie UK[2].

Pinnacle Power provided the management services for the entirety of the project on behalf of the funders, UK Green Investment Bank Plc (now Green Investment Group (GIG)) and Equitex ESI CHP (Nottingham) Ltd[2].

Plant

The plant uses a traditional steam cycle for generating electricity through the combustion of life-expired Wood Waste from local sources[1].

The technology employs a moving floor which has a capacity of approximately 200m3 and delivers fuel to the boiler at a rate of approximately 7 tonnes per hour[3].

Tonnage Input/Fuel

The tonnage received by the plant in the most recent Annual Sustainability Report for 2018-19[4] was reported by Ofgem as follows:

Biomass Tonnage (2018-19)
Wood Waste 29,016
Other 0
Total 29,016

The Wood Waste is received from a variety of sources. The Wood Waste tonnage received cannot be directly compared with the stated historical tonnage received and recorded in the EA statistics as these are recorded on a calendar year basis (i.e. January 2018 to December 2018) and was 29,151 tonnes.
