Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating or WUDS that used certain Persistent Organic Pollutants (also known as POPS) as flame retardants require treatments that destroy them. Thermal treatment is one of the ways to achieve this and a ban on WUDS to landfill and the latest guidelines by the EA in the form of a Regulatory Position Statement are due to be issued in December 2022 - indicating WUDS should be sent to EfW facilities. If WUDS require shredding prior to being sent to EfW then there will be implications for dust capture and control.
