The overall size of the Wood Waste market in the UK is estimated to be between 4,500,000 tonnes and 5,000,000 tonnes, categorized into Grades A to D according to its level of contamination. DEFRA figures accounted for 3,362,970 tonnes of wood waste in their most recent 2016 figures, the remaining tonnage being left in mixed waste streams. The separated wood waste is primarily used in animal bedding, as recycled wood panel board and in Biomass EfW. The use in Biomass EfW has increased rapidly over recent years from 1,630,000 tonnes in 2017 to around 2,000,000 tonnes in 2018. Whilst tonnage data is presently not available for 2019, if all capacity is delivered in Biomass EfW plants that are in operation (and ignoring those in development) the capacity would exceed 3,000,000 tonnes, dramatically changing the supply-demand characteristics of the market and sustainability and balance of the overall market.

In May 2021 the Wood Recycling Association reported an update on their view of the market and the impact that the national lockdowns had on the market in 2020 compared to 2019 as follows:
* Collected Wood Waste decreased from 4,500,000 tonnes to 4,050,000 tonnes
* 2,700,000 tonnes went to 'Chapter IV compliant biomass facilities' (Biomass EfW) a growth of 3% to 63%
* 1,000,000 tonnes went to panel board manufacture, an increase of 1% to 26%
* 500,000 tonnes went to animal bedding and other high value recycling, an increase of 1% to 9%
* Exports reduced from 190,000 tonnes in 2019 to 92,000 tonnes in 2020, with an increase in imports from 20,000 tonnes to 82,000 tonnes
