Plant Description
The facility utilises 4 lines of Nexterra’s fixed-bed updraft Gasification system technology, which is an Advanced Conversion Technology. MWH Treatment provided EPC services for the project[1][2].
The plant is designed to process 72,000 tonnes a year (at 15% moisture) or 60,000 tonnes (dry) a year at 20MJ/kg[3].
The plant is operated Colbalt Energy on behalf of Tyseley Operations Ltd under a 7 year contract from April 2023[5]
History
The facility was developed by Carbonarius, a JV between O-Gen (latterly Cogen) and Una Group.
The project had an estimated cost of £47.8m which was financed Green Investment Bank (GIB), Balfour Beatty, Eternity Capital Management, Foresight’s UK Waste Resources and Energy Investments (UKWREI) fund, and Carbonarius’s GCP Infrastructure Fund (GCP)[1].
Birmingham Bio Power became operational at the start of 2016[1].
In 2021 the ownership was 'rationalised' with Gravis Capital becoming the sole owner[4].
