Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ)

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNEZ) was established in February 2023 following a mini reshuffle of Ministers and a governmental reorganisation.

The department is focused on the energy portfolio of the former Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). It's overarching aim is to secure the UK's long-term energy supply, bringing down bills and halving inflation[1].

Responsibilities and Objectives

The overarching original resonsibilities are:

  • delivering security of energy supply
  • ensuring properly functioning energy markets
  • encouraging greater energy efficiency
  • seizing the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries

Equality objectives are:

  • Enhance energy security
  • Protect billpayers
  • Create economic growth for the UK, and generate and protect jobs
  • Reduce the UK’s carbon emissions
