Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA)
The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) is a regulatory agency within DAERA which has waste regulation as part of its remit. The Agency’s primary purpose is to protect and enhance Northern Ireland’s environment, and in doing so, deliver health and well-being benefits and support economic growth.

Priorities
The agency has 3 key strategic priorities[1]:
- Environmental Regulation, Protection and Enforcement.
- Water Quality
- Nature Recovery
A Framework Document has been drawn up by DAERA in consultation with the NIEA to set out the broad framework within which NIEA operate. The Framework Document does not convey any legal powers or responsibilities but describes the operational relationship between NIEA, as an Executive Agency, and DAERA[2].
