Peterborough EfW

An EfW facility based upon conventional combustion technology which is considered an ERF as a result of having R1 status. Peterborough EfW has a permitted capacity of 110,000 tonnes per year and is operated by Viridor.

Delivery of waste is by road and the facility processes primarily residual Household Waste from the City of Peterborough [1][2].

Plant Description

Built by a JV between Interserve and Babcox & Wilcox Volund A/S as a turnkey EPC contract, which started in summer 2013 and was delivered in December 2015 at a reported £74m capital cost[3].

The plant comprises one line via standard combustion B&W Volund proprietary Dynagrate technology, generating super-heated steam, and is configured to run on primarily residual Household Waste and similar residual Commercial Waste with an original design capability of up to 85,000 tonnes per annum and generating 7.25MWe based on CV of 9MJ/kg [4].

History

The Peterborough facility was built to primarily service residual Household Waste from Peterborough under a 30 year PPP contract. It is located close to Peterborough Power Station in Fengate, and commenced operation in December 2015[2].

The permiited was increased from 85,000 tonnes per year to 110,000 tonnes a year in 2024[1].

In December 2025 Equitix increased their stake in Viridor with a path to acquire 50% of the business[5].
