Port Clarence EfW

An EfW facility based upon combustion technology Port Clarence EfW (also known as Teeside Renewable Energy Plant) entered into re-development/construction in late 2025/2026 and is permitted for up to 333,000 tonnes per year of RDF. Vital Energi are undertaking the construction works and will operate the plant.

The site is located in Billingham and is being re-engineered to be able to receive RDF, delivered by road[1][2][3].

Plant Description

The plant is a standard combustion process comprising a single line of grate technology handling up to 33.4 tonnes per hour of RDF.

The plant will be designed to produce 32.4MWe with export of 28.9MWe after use in the plant[1][2].

History

Originally developed as a Biomass EfW facility for waste wood, the project had been dormant since 2019.

Since then a number of parties had attempted to re-develop the site, including Port Clarence Energy Limited, before Vital Energi secured the site and funding to redevelop the site in late 2025.

Waste is to be supplied under 10 year exclusive arrangement with N+P[3].
