Plant Description
The facility will use conventional grate combustion technology comprising two lines[7] provided by Standardkessell Baumgarte GmbH and delivered by them in a joint venture with Mytilineos S.A over a three year construction period at a cost of c.£345 to £355 million[6].
An application was made in December 2021 to increase the capacity from 400,000 tonnes a year[7] to 500,000 tonnes per year.
History
The facility was developed by Peel L&P as part of their wider Protos[1] energy hub in Ince, with the project taken forwards to financial close between joint venture partners Biffa, Covanta and Maquaries' Green Investment Group[2].
The project reached financial close in December 2020, with Biffa supplying the feedstock and Covanta providing the operational and maintenance services[2] and a PPA for 15 years with Smartest Energy[5]. The facility ownership was split Biffa 25%, Covanta 37.5%, and Green Investment Group 37.5%[6]
In March 2022 EQT, the owner of Covanta, bought the interests of the Green Investment Group in this and three other projects (Rookery Pit Energy Recovery Facility (Rookery South), Newhurst EFW, and Earls Gate Energy Centre) to leave Green Investment Group with no further interest in the projects[3].
In June 2025 Encyclis bought the 25% interest of Biffa to give them complete control of the project[4].
