Proximity Principle
Is a UK waste management policy which seeks to promote the management of wastes as close to their point of production as possible. It aims to reduce the environmental impact of transporting waste, encourage regional self sufficiency and ensure communtities take responsibility for their own waste production [1].
The Proximity Principle was however first introduced as a consideration in relation to waste within the EU's Strategy for Waste Management when the 1974 Waste Framework Directive was amended in 1991 [1].

Key Aspects of the Proximity Principle in the UK [1]
- Environmental & Financial Efficiency: By minimising transportation distances, it reduces carbon emissions and transport-related costs.
- Waste Hierarchy: it works alongside the waste hierarchy to ensure that waste is treated locall, rather than being shipped long distances, reducing reliance on landfil.
- Planning Policy: it is mandatory consideration for local planning authorities and businesses when identifying sites for waste managment facilities.
