STAT Codes

The historical consolidated reporting by the UK to the EU was via STAT codes[1][2] and they aggregate the more detailed EWC codes used on an ‘operating basis’ to describe the source and nature of the waste.

These STAT codes are still used by the UK for consolidated reporting of Waste Statistics and reflect a Substance Orientated Classification (SOC) approach

Approach

As an example, there are 16 separate EWC codes under chapter 18 – this chapter is described as “Wastes From Human Or Animal Health Care and/or Related Research (except kitchen and restaurant wastes not arising from immediate health care)”.

These 16 individual codes are aggregated into three different STAT codes:

  • 5.21 Healthcare and Biological Waste
  • 2.14 Chemical Waste
  • 10.22 Mixed and undifferentiated materials

As a result, whilst it may be easy to assume that all EWC ‘18 codes’ are reported in the consolidated reporting as Healthcare Waste, a proportion in fact are classified into two other categories.
