Tees Valley Energy Recovery Facility

An EfW facility which reached financial close in April 2026 and due to start construction later in 2026, was developed by Tees Valley Energy Recovery Ltd and to be constructed and operated by Viridor.

The permitted capacity is 450,000 tonnes per year. Delivery of waste is to be by rail road and the facility is intedend to process primarily residual Household Waste and some Commercial Waste[1].

Plant Description

The plant is a standard combustion process based on 2 lines of a conventional grate technology from Kanadevia Inova as the EPC provider[2].

The plant will generate up to 49.9MWe and is designed to be CHP ready[3].

History

Tees Valley Energy Recovery Ltd (TVERL) is a partnership comprising Darlington, Durham, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton that developed the site.

The project is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between TVERL and Viridor which reached financial close in April 2026[1].

The plant is planned to be operational from 2030.
